Inspired by the floral and fruit arrangements found on Henri Matisse's Intérieur aux Aubergines (1911), the Belle-épine textile wallpaper boasts a graphic and organic pattern that plays on contours to give it a textured result.

Applied all over your walls or simply as a touch of color reminiscent of a painting to enhance your interior, it has a number of uses.

DESIGNER

CRISTINA CELESTINO

For the permanent collection Intérieur aux aubergines, Maison Matisse was inspired by Henri Matisse's eponymous painting from 1911 and collaborated with the Italian designer Cristina Celestino. This choice seemed self-evident. The designer’s world is perfectly adapted to that of the artist’s painting in this particularly decorative canvas where the planes deeply superimpose each other.

Cristina Celestino was born in Pordenone in 1980. After graduating from the Università Iuav in Venice (Higher Institute of Architecture of Venice), in 2005 she began to work with several prestigious firms and focused her attention on interior architecture and design.

In 2010 she moved to Milan, where she founded her brand, Attico Design. As an architect-designer, Cristina Celestino designs projects both for private clients and for companies such as Fendi/Fendi Casa, Fornace Brioni and CC-Tapis, as well as providing creative direction, interiors, and fixtures for Sergio Rossi..

Cristina Celestino has won numerous international awards, including the Special Jury Prize "Salone del Mobile Milano Award" in 2016 and the ELLE DECO International Design Awards in the Wallcovering category in 2017 with Plumage for Botteganove and in 2019 with Giardino delle Delizie for Fornace Brioni.

In September 2022, Cristina Celestino was elected "designer of the year" by Maison & Objet, which devoted an entire space to her during its September edition, around a project called "Exotic Palace".

Cristina Celestino has imagined for Maison Matisse a collection inspired by Henri Matisse's painting Intérieur aux eggplants (1911), composed of several seats (sofas, armchairs), coffee tables, folding screens, household linen, wallpapers and decorative objects.

INSPIRATION

Considered as one of Henri Matisse's most decorative pieces, it has inspired Cristina Celestino to create an entire decorative universe in a collection that reinterprets the all-over style. The textile wallpaper draws inspiration from the floral and fruit arrangements at the center of the painting as well as the leaves on the tablecloth.

ARTS AND MATERIALS

The Belle-épine textile wallpaper is made on jacquard looms, with natural yarns woven by one of the oldest Venetian manufacturers dating back to the 18th century. Constructing this Belle-épine wallpaper on a jacquard loom is a true feat of craftsmanship that requires innovation and traditional and ancestral savoir-faire in order to obtain such a complex pattern.
