I aspired to maximise the inherent material quality of stone. Being immersed in warm water contained within stone brings instinctive comfort to human beings”.

These are the words of renowned architect and designer Kengo Kuma who, with Ishiburo, designed a collection which creates a truly harmonious and tranquil bathroom experience.

Available in Bianco Carrara, Crema d’Orcia, Pietra d’Avola and Silk Georgette®, it is compatible with both wall-mounted and freestanding tapware and can also be provided with an access panel for inspection.

KENGO KUMA

Japanese Kengo Kuma is a leading name in international architecture. He has worked with Salvatori since 2009 on projects such as the Stone Forest installation for the 2014 Salone del Mobile. In the same year, he designed the iconic Ishiburo collection for us, his first ever product range for any brand.

In 2021 he designed MA House for The Village, our collection of contemporary miniature sculptures by renowned artists who were invited to create their interpretation of the concept of home.

Kengo Kuma was born in 1954. Before establishing Kengo Kuma & Associates in 1990, he received his Master’s Degree in Architecture from the University of Tokyo, where he is currently a University Professor of Architecture.

Having been inspired by Kenzo Tange’s Yoyogi National Gymnasium, built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Kengo Kuma decided to pursue architecture at a young age, and later entered the Architecture program at the University of Tokyo, where he studied under Hiroshi Hara and Yoshichika Uchida.

During his Graduate studies, he made a research trip across the Sahara, exploring various villages and settlements, observing a unique power and beauty.

After his time as a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University in New York, he established his office in Tokyo. Since then, Kengo Kuma & Associates has designed architectural works in over twenty countries and received prestigious awards, including the Architectural Institute of Japan Award, the Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award (Finland), and the International Stone Architecture Award (Italy), among others.

Kengo Kuma & Associates aims to design architecture which naturally merges with its cultural and environmental surroundings, proposing gentle, human scaled buildings. The office is constantly in search of new materials to replace concrete and steel, and seeks a new approach for architecture in a post-industrial society.

“Kengo Kuma has designed architectural works in over twenty countries and is the recipient of a host of prestigious international awards.”

GOOD TO KNOW

- The Ishiburo bathtub can be supplied with an access panel for inspection, so if you wish to have this, please specify on which side you would like it placed at the time of ordering.
- This bathtub is compatible with either wall-mounted or freestanding taps

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

- All our finished products leave our Tuscan premises pre-sealed. Since we do not like to paint the surface of our lovely stones with transparent paints or resins, we apply three coats of the highest possible level of protective sealant. This helps to preserve the product without compromising the wonderful natural look and feel of the stone.
- That said, please bear in mind that there is no sealer on the market that can make natural stone 100% stain proof, especially if you leave the staining agent on it for a prolonged period. The sealant acts as a temporary barrier that allows you to have a few hours between the moment a staining substance (for example, wine or coffee) comes into contact with the stone and the moment you wipe it off. The important thing is to act quickly before a substance is absorbed into the stone, as that is when it causes staining.
- Please DO NOT use cleaners containing abrasive cleansers, ammonia, bleach, acid or even those “homemade remedies” made from lemon, vinegar and the like.
- If you are a particularly assiduous cleaner or you have difficulty removing a mark, you can use specialist stone cleaning products and, if to set your mind at rest you can periodically apply a new coat of sealant.
For cleaning stone, wood and metal, simply use a soft cloth with water or a neutral detergent.
